If the Roman’s created the style and laid the foundation for what it might be then leave it to the French to make it grander than perhaps even Cesar could have imagined. We introduced the Peristyle as a “garden form” in one of our earlier posts as a roman reconstruction from Pompeii, here the peristyle gets crazy at The Grand Trianon from the Palace of Versailles. Leave us remember that this was a private retreat for the King within the palace itself… so this isn’t even the main gig.
Since we can’t have it all, but we can pick up elements from the design – the black and the white marble floors are elegant, pinkish red columns and entry, restrained other than of course the sheer size itself.
We will inevitably be coming back again to Versailles and our affair of all classic European design.
