Just read on the Huffington Post that once the Rio Olympics wrap up for the summer the buildings and stadiums and all that will be re-used and re-purposed as public schools and parks, so that’s a relief. In the past most Olympic villages and all the buildings have pretty much gone to waste, which is just an embarrassment and terrible for the country and for the planet, hard to imagine anything more wasteful. Very glad to hear that at least a real effort may be made to change that. We wouldn’t suggest ditching the Olympics, but we really need to think about maybe using the Olympics to help countries and communities build bad needed infrastructure.
“We’re at a stage in the Olympics,” Bill Hanway of the engineering firm behind the Rio Games told Wired. “Where social and financial responsibility are much more important than they used to be.”
