Before we get crazy on showcasing all of the glorious outdoor design ideas for having your own backyard African safari camp we thought it would be incredibly helpful to find for you the actual tents, tipi’s and yurts that you could use as a base structure. Yes you could do a custom job, but the path of least resistance is to go out, buy a tent, put it up yourself and then design around that, we’re not talking about your average trip to REI or The North Face at the neighborhood mall. We’re talking the large canvas old style safari tents, to help conjure the obvious image, think of Meryl Streep in Out Of Africa.
Probably the best purveyor that we’ve been able to dig up online is The Colorado Yurt Company. They sell the full triumvirate of yurts, tipi’s and tents in a wide range of sizes, with good sturdy canvas and full set of instructions, everything included. Although you will need some basic tools which you probably have around the house anyway.
Pricing is all over the place, a basic 30 foot yurt will set you back about $10,000, a safari tent maybe $2,000, a 12 foot diameter Tipi starts about $700. Obviously pricing depends a lot on how big of a structure you’re looking for. They do have handy calculators which gives you fairly accurate pricing based on size and add ons.
