The day has finally come, well, actually the day was two days ago when Tesla officially announced that it’s solar roof was now available for sale through it’s website. The solar roof itself is of little surprise, for the most part we have been hearing about it for quite some time, but haven’t had any real specifics. The press release on the Tesla website gives you all the information you need on basic pricing and ordering. Roughly speaking, and this will be somewhat meaningless without context, the price per square foot of the roof will be just under $22. The announcement does have a very nice handy graph to put give a little context to the pricing, what various other roofing options cost. For the Tesla roof, obviously the overall cost over time is greatly reduced by the energy savings generated.
We can’t, and at least for now, won’t make any price comparison between the solar roof and a traditional solar PV system that is installed on an existing roof, the two are an apples to oranges, but at first glance obviously the roof is much more expensive than a roof mounted PV system.
While hardly a new concept, solar roof shingles have been around, on and off the market for a very long time, the Tesla difference is that the company has the financial wherewithal to actually bring the product to market, produce it, sell it and install it.
