Lets be honest, solar and wind power and other renewable energy technologies are pretty boring, they don’t really spark the imagination all that much, possibly because they have pretty limited form factor and design options – solar PV works best as a square or rectangle, big box, and wind turbines are basically big blades slowly spinning. So it’s kind of hard to find exciting new interpretive designs. That being said, we’re kind of impressed by floating solar farms. Very cool idea, if not exactly attractive at least very useful. Floating solar is being used all over the place now, but seems that maybe it got some real publicity a few years back when the idea was being used for vineyards in California. Vines need water and vineyard operations need power. California ends to be pretty dry, if not sometimes in the midst of a huge drought. A couple of smart people figured out that floating solar panels could provide power, while at the same time giving cover and protection against evaporation to the “ponds” that are used to help water the vineyards… Genius at work, helping to improve the environment and get us wine that we can feel good about.
